  • Tuition must be paid before lessons are given
  • Group lessons, theory classes, and recitals are included with tuition. Students may choose not to attend, but will not be refunded any tuition.
  • Students may not be studying with another teacher upon enrollment
  • Students should attend lessons even if they have not practiced for the week. Lessons are a great place for guided practice and should be utilized!
  • Summer lessons are required to ensure placement in the fall semester.
  • Fingernails must be kept short.
  • Students must have a piano in their home.
Missed Lesson Policy
There are no refunds for lessons missed by the student for any reason. Make-ups will only be given in the case of family emergency or illness with a full day’s notice. Each student receives one “sick” make-up per semester, if the teacher is notified BEFORE the lesson to be missed.
There are absolutely no refunds for lessons missed because of student scheduling conflicts or other instances that prevent the student from fulfilling his obligation and commitment to lessons (such as soccer games). The student will be provided with a swap list in the case of irregular schedule conflicts. Optionally, students may swap lesson times with another student to avoid missing a lesson.
In the case of the teacher canceling a lesson due to a performance, the teacher will reschedule the lesson during a group lesson week.

Tuition
Payment:
You may use personal checks, cash, PayPal, or pay the semester in full. Another option would be to set Christina Horn up as a “payee” if you use online banking for Bill Pay.
Personal checks should be made out to Christina Horn.
You may opt to pay via PayPal using christina@hudsonkmusic.com.

Tuition is calculated on a semester basis, not a monthly basis.
Private lessons, group lessons, rehearsals, recitals, festivals, and auditions are included in the tuition amount. Students are required to pay full tuition regardless of attendance in groups and at recitals.

The rates for tuition are based on the following:
Annual maintenance fee: $35*
Half hour session:$24 or $90/month
Forty-five minute session: $36 or $144/month
Hour session:$48 or $160/month (discounted)

Extra events (included with tuition):
NFMC Festival (2 full-Saturdays).
PRE-FESTIVAL RECITAL
ANNUAL WINTER/SPRING RECITAL
Shipping on music books.
Music Teacher Conferences (must attend to participate in festivals/auditions).
Membership fees for NFMC and KMTA and MTNA which allows students access to auditions, festivals and scholarships.
Membership in the Love Your Piano Junior Club for NFFC (you must be a member to play in festival, bet you didn’t know that).

*The maintenance fee covers the cost of piano tunings, copies, room rentals, and all other extraneous materials used in lessons through the year.

Students are required to pay for their own music books and/or reimburse their teacher for materials purchased for them.

Entrance fees for National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival and Knoxville Music Teachers Association Auditions and Theory Tests must be paid before the student may participate.

Tuition is due on the first lesson of the month. Each week that payment is late the rate increases by $10.

*Tuition may be increased on a semester basis.

Practice
To measure practice in minutes is defeating in purpose. As musicians, we strive to attain a level of focused work that produces results. But often times, young beginners need a guideline for how long this should take. A general rule for practice time is thus: practice everyday for the length of your lesson. If you have a 30 minute lesson, strive for at least 30 minutes a day. Students will learn good practice habits in their lessons. For students under 12, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to positively encourage and motivate at home. Let’s talk about it!

Adult/teen students will need to evaluate their own practice habits. There will be constant dialogue in lessons about practice and how it is proceeding at home. Read my favorite article on adult practice habits...

“Of course I’ve practiced – some weeks more than others and some years more than others. But unless I’m sick or out of town – I attend a lesson each and every week. The discipline required in my course of study? Showing up. It is having the permission – not to practice – that motivates me to attend the lessons! And, of course, attending the lessons is ultimately what motivates me to practice! As any good teacher knows, a student’s motivation to excel comes from within. And learning how to motivate students is the hallmark of a great teacher.”- from Insight for Independent Artists.
